Getting the best results from laser tattoo removal is not just about what happens in the treatment room — it is also about how you prepare before each session and how you care for your skin afterward. At South Florida Laser Studio, we provide detailed pre and post care instructions to every Miami and Boca Raton client. This guide covers everything you need to know.
Before Your Laser Tattoo Removal Session: Pre-Care
2+ Weeks Before Your Session
- Avoid sun exposure on the treatment area. This is especially important for South Florida clients — Miami’s intense UV exposure can significantly increase the risk of complications if you come in with a tan, even a natural one. Wear SPF 30+ on treated areas daily.
- Do not use self-tanner or spray tan on or near the treatment area for at least 2 weeks before your session.
- Avoid topical retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, or chemical exfoliants on the treatment area. These thin the skin and increase sensitivity.
48–72 Hours Before Your Session
- Do not drink alcohol. Alcohol dehydrates you and suppresses immune function — both of which slow your results. Your immune system needs to be operating at full capacity to flush ink particles between sessions.
- Stay well hydrated. Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment. Hydrated skin responds better to laser treatment.
- Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements if medically safe to do so — aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E. These can increase bruising risk. Always consult your doctor before stopping any prescribed medication.
Day of Your Session
- Arrive with clean, product-free skin in the treatment area. No lotions, oils, deodorant, or makeup on or near the tattoo.
- Wear comfortable, loose clothing that allows easy access to the tattoo without rubbing.
- Eat a full meal beforehand. Treating on an empty stomach can make some clients light-headed.
- Shave the treatment area if it is a hairy area like the forearm or leg — not required but appreciated.
- Numbing cream — if you have requested numbing cream for a sensitive area, apply it 30 to 45 minutes before your appointment under plastic wrap. Ask our team when booking.
💡 South Florida tip: If you have been at the beach or outdoors in the Miami sun even a few days before your appointment, let us know. We would rather reschedule than treat skin that has had recent UV exposure — it protects you and gives you better results.
After Your Laser Tattoo Removal Session: Post-Care
Immediately After Treatment
- Expect redness, swelling, and warmth in the treated area — this is normal and resolves within a few hours to a couple of days.
- Frosting — a temporary white discoloration on the skin surface immediately after treatment — is normal and resolves within 30 to 60 minutes.
- Apply a cold compress or ice pack (wrapped in a clean cloth) to soothe the area for the first few hours.
- Keep the area clean and dry. Gently pat dry — do not rub.
First 24–72 Hours After Treatment
- Do not pick, scratch, or pop any blisters that may form. Blistering is a normal healing response and is actually a sign that your immune system is actively responding. Picking increases scarring risk.
- Apply a thin layer of healing ointment (Aquaphor or a fragrance-free antibiotic ointment) if skin feels tight or dry.
- Avoid heat — no hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, or intense workouts for 24 to 48 hours. In Miami’s heat, even heavy outdoor activity can overheat treated skin.
- No swimming — pools, oceans, or hot tubs — until the skin is fully healed. Miami’s pool and beach lifestyle means this one matters.
- Keep the area out of the sun. Apply SPF 50+ if the treated area will be exposed.
Days 3–14 Post-Treatment
- Moisturize daily with a fragrance-free lotion to support healing.
- Continue sun protection — SPF 50+ on treated areas every day. South Florida sun is intense year-round.
- You may see the tattoo appear darker in the first week as the skin processes the treatment — this is normal and fading begins in the weeks that follow.
- Avoid makeup or cosmetic products directly on the treated area until fully healed.
- Stay hydrated and exercise lightly — good circulation helps your lymphatic system clear ink particles faster.
Between Sessions (Ongoing)
- Attend your sessions on schedule — 6 to 8 weeks apart — for optimal, consistent results.
- Do not smoke. Smoking is one of the most significant factors that slows laser tattoo removal results — it impairs immune function and dramatically extends the number of sessions needed.
- Stay healthy. Your immune system does the clearing work between sessions. Good sleep, hydration, and nutrition support your results.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you prepare for laser tattoo removal?
Avoid sun exposure for 2+ weeks before, stay hydrated, arrive with clean product-free skin, eat beforehand, and wear loose comfortable clothing over the treatment area. Our Miami team sends full pre-care instructions after booking.
Is blistering after laser tattoo removal normal?
Yes. Blistering is a normal healing response and indicates your immune system is actively responding to treatment. Do not pop or pick blisters — let them heal naturally.
Can I go to the beach after laser tattoo removal?
Avoid the beach, ocean, and pool for at least 72 hours after each session — and keep treated areas covered with SPF 50+ any time you are outdoors in South Florida’s sun during your treatment course.
Does smoking affect laser tattoo removal?
Yes significantly. Smoking impairs immune function, which slows your body’s ability to clear broken-down ink particles between sessions. Smokers typically need more sessions to achieve the same results as non-smokers.
